We love working on packaging design for our clients. For beauty businesses, upselling retail products can mean a huge increase in the revenue you generate from each client. Some data suggests that the most highly profitable beauty salons make up to 15%-20% of their sales from retail so it goes without saying that selling products alongside your core services has massive income generating potential.
So we know that selling products should be a no-brainer for beauty businesses but what about launching your very own product line? While it can seem like a daunting task and a huge learning curve there are so many benefits to creating your own range of products and working with us on packaging design can make it so much easier.
Have you ever completed your treatment on a client, had them ask what products you used only to respond with “Thanks, I’ll order it on Amazon/Boots/LookFantastic…”. If you launch your own product line you can control the price and where it is available to buy so that your clients CAN’T price shop you against other retailers like they’re currently doing.
Who launches products? Experts do. Launching a product is similar to writing a book, once you’re an author (or product founder) your credibility goes through the roof as does the value of your brand which allows you to charge more for what you do AND opens up wider opportunities such as press releases, speaking opportunities and more.
Product is a great way to increase the connection and reach with your ideal client because the type of products you release says something about your business, for example, are they more natural, are they luxury, is the packaging bright, what is the shopping experience like? And the more we communicate that we align with the needs and values of our ideal client the more they will fall in love with your brand and become loyal, raving fans.
Product also offers a different and extended experience to that of services, from the retail bags to the unboxing experience, to the scent and new opportunities for your clients to share your brand on social media – launching a product opens up a whole new world to explore in terms of brand and business growth.
Products have different markets and audiences when compared to service-based businesses so by launching a product you are opening up opportunities to enter new markets. For example, if your salon is based in Bristol your brand reach is likely to be in and around the Bristol area which limits it in a way. By offering products that you can ship worldwide, you have vastly opened up the potential reach of your brand. Like some of our clients, you could also have your products stocked in other salons or even major retailers and publications which again, means there are thousands more people becoming aware of your brand.
Since your business is no longer location dependent, you can leverage the platforms of influencers to grow your brand by having promotional partnerships for your products. Your clients may also recommend the product to friends (friends that may not otherwise have booked in for a service with you) AND your product (i.e you and your brand) will always be in their home and become even more familiar and engrained into their lifestyle which builds that all important trust factor.
Lastly, if you’re services are on the more expensive end perhaps you are out of budget for a particular group of people. By offering product you are creating a more affordable entry point for them to start building a relationship with your brand. Once they know how amazing you are – well, I’m sure you might find that their budget for your services will grow.
You could say that here at Sugar Branded we’re a little product obsessed and when we have a beauty industry expert who comes to us and says “Hey, I want to launch a product.” we literally do a little excited dance because we KNOW the opportunities that this can open for them.
After years of working with thousands of clients to rebuild their brows & confidence, Heather carved a niche for herself as a corrective specialist out of her beautiful salon Niche Brow Bar in Glasgow. Heather knew that it was time to take her business to the next level and got in touch with us to help bring her dream to life – a brow care range including brow pencils, growth serum, and other products. Now, Heather is able to reach a huge international audience, far beyond her initial reach of Glasgow. https://www.nichebrowco.co.uk/
We worked together to design her product packaging plus an influencer launch campaign with fun, luxury promotional boxes – since then Heather and Niche Brow Co have gone from strength to strength with features in WOTC magazine and have won multiple awards.
Another example is Kate, founder of KC Hair Extensions Bristol – a specialist extension salon with a gorgeous interior and luxury vibe. Since she’d been working with hair & extensions for years, she noticed that there weren’t any hair brushes that she felt fully confident recommending to her clients. Thus, she decided to launch her own – The KC Pro Brush, a brush that glides through any type of hair, evenly distributing scalp oils while getting rid of any tangles – a complete game changer in her industry.
Of course, we were just as excited as she was to help her launch this product and build upon the branding we’d created for her beautiful salon. We produced a sleek & minimal box for the brush – ready for her to start retailing in her own salon & beyond.
